Excellent book. Sometimes hard to keep track of everything as the author packs so much in but that’s a very minor criticism.
To begin with, I think the author was limited by what he could do due to the nature of how this was a "shortest history book". The first 70 pages go through 1500 years of German history and the next 160 are of Germany from 1525 to now which creates a lopsided feel and sometimes left me a little lost. However, the part four was excellent covering how in history and today there is still a tension between a Western European tilted western Germany and a pro-Russia and extreme East Elbian Germany that still is possesed by the ghost of Prussia. I feel like this book would be greater if it was treated more as a short history of modern Germany from perhaps the 1500s to now, even though the early linguistics and Roman past were interesting and important to the greater German history.

Okay, so...
I liked that the author covered so much history and the graphs, pictures, etc made it easier to understand. His sectioning was also reasonable.
However, I don't agree with his main thesis and think there's no real point in trying to devide the German nation into East and West (and South) Germans to a point where all evil comes from the east and even to this day, germany would be better off without it. Idk imo a dangerous thought to plant into peoples head especially with how weakly he arguments it.
He tries to apply this thesis to everything - literally everything - in his book and it gets boring and is repetitive and often, it doesn't make sense.
He also left out pretty important events imo, like the dolchstoßlegende, which was a pretty important part of the whole 'hitler/NSDAP chapter' of German history and generally, i think he brushed over some really important topics too fast.
All in all, it was nice to see all these historic events put into order, as I had learned about most of them at school but never in order, but his conclusion was pretty weak to me.

a solid overview of german history. not too into depth, but it’s a great starting point to discover new topics to read more into.
