This book moves and I found great humor in the number of equations. It’s so comprehensive and the maps are incredibly helpful. I’ve learned a lot and feel as if I could read this book again. As an American I feel as if we think about country lines way too much instead of thinking of historical cultural divides. West and East Germany are not the same.

It starts well, but when the author moves to the description of the last five hundred years of German history, it turns into a political essay/rant about how evil the East Germans/prussian descendants are compared to the good, honest and hard working west germans. I only give it two stars because the the author gives a quick and interesting description of the first millennia and a half.

4.5 ⭐️

An enjoyable whiz through the history of a well-known and very specifically studied country. An enjoyable one to fly through, picking up many historical facts that I’ll no doubt forget in a week. Certainly good to read while in Germany, and makes me look forward to Berlin!

Does a good job with the beginning of German history, but for a general history of the country he has a working thesis that East Germany and specifically Prussia is the reason for most of their past and present problems. While it’s an interesting argument— to place it as accepted fact in a short history is a little dangerous.
