Just to note, I wasn't reading this to learn mindfulness, but as part of a reading challenge - the choice of books by Vietnamese authors set in/about Vietnam at my library are slim pickings, and since I didn't want to read about war, I saw that this short book includes anecdotes about Vietnam and Thich Nhat Hanh's experiences outside of his home country (many of which, it turns out, are about war).

However, the anecdotes are short and not so evocative of his life in Vietnam, so on these I was disappointed.
The teachings in the book are pleasant but very fundamental, and frustratingly simple in that some rationale about the behaviour of people and the 'interbeing' of society are overlooked or need citation. One of the author's principles is truth and not sharing information unless you know it to be factual, so we can probably trust him! But this is a big omission in credibility for me.

plus, It's dated, from the alternation of male and female pronouns for the hypothical people used to demonstrate perspectives throughout the book (for me, the choices of these are distracting, and I don't think gender is important here), and the teachings about environmental impact from decades passed which have of course been largely ignored... And the random disapproval of TV 😂

I think many people would enjoy the meditations in this book, especially if looking to review some fundamentals, keeping in mind when it was written. But not for me.
