I was VIBING i was LOVING it then around 80% i noticed that it was from the same author as lord of scoundrels and i started vibing even harder. Mightve found a new favorite author

They talked way too much and that’s coming from me, a lover of dialogue. Didn’t like that the fmc threw things at the mmc. She was annoying, in general. Not the strong female type LC was hoping she would be. They also didn’t feel very lovable. And the story was entirely too long without really doing anything.

I really liked it one of the best HR no unnecessary drama or misunderstandings and conflict between the main characters. Both MC were well suited for each other

Pros:
  • nursing her back to health trope
  • independent, strong-willed, and interesting FMC
  • MMC with a profession (as opposed to an aristocrat who I guess runs estates and manages investments, but they never seen to do much)
  • interesting theme of the intersection of gender and class, especially relating to the wealthy and titled but condescended to and controlled FMC feeling stifled and useless
Cons:
  • misogynistic MMC (although this is sometimes playful/joking and I guess there was some attempt at character growth on this, he habitually categorizes women as unintelligent and less useful than men; sometimes this is in direct insult to FMC and other times it is in praise of her in a " you're not like the other girls" fashion)
  • MCs constantly bickering and insulting each other; this becomes a sort of love language, but I just don't care for it regardless
  • MMC fails to adequately assuage FMC's fears/insecurity over being useless/purposeless

This novel immediately hooked me in and had me up to 3am on a night that I definitely shouldn't have been up that late. The banter is at another level that I have yet to see and I loved the set up of their second chance meeting! However, soon enough I lost all my steam and love for them as it began to drag. I felt this way upon the start of a certain "trial" which I didn't enjoy at all. It felt nonsensical and not in a fun way. I powered through till after the marriage and then just kind of skimmed the rest honestly. It definitely felt like too much book and the ended didn't need to happen the way that it did. I'm kind of sad because when I started this, the first 100 pages had me convinced I was reading a top 5 contender for my favs in historical romance and it ended up being a snooze 💤

Reread. Just as good as the first time.
