I really enjoyed this- a darker late of vengeance, betrayal and friendships. The plot was well driven and the multiple POVs helped create a richer, deeper story. The pacing in the fist 1/2 was a little slow, but just World building but not much happened though it definitely picked up. I received an advance review copy for free from Book Sirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

4.5 stars--Just finished Blood Coven, and wow! Voerman's fast-paced and lush writing drew me in right away, and I soon found myself thinking, "Just one more chapter," over and over. This is a dark, Gothic horror reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood, and I loved seeing the story told through this lens. There were a couple instances where the language felt a little too "modern" for the story's setting, but that's more of a personal preference. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series :)

"We are the dark and dangerous things in these woods, Red."

This novel was DARK. And when I say dark, I mean dark. Violence. Blood. Murder. Slitting throats. It's such a spooky season novel and I adored it. There are some heavy topics and themes discussed and involved in this, so look up trigger warnings if you need to. (I am desensitized to everything at this point, so I never read TW's bc I love getting surprised.) Anyways, let's talk about this book.

I am bad at explaining what books are about even if I read the synopsis (I never read the synopsis), but I will try to explain what is involved in this book without spoiling anything. There is a coven of witches, The Wolf, who lurks in the woods and will snatch young girls if they stray from the path, evil family dynamics and truly evil characters. This book is written in four parts. There is multiple POV, which I loved. It is written in two alternate timelines, the year of the curse, and the year of the moon. It kinda comes full circle and you can see how the people of the past connect with the people of the present.

The women empowerment in this was everything. I loved how Red was coming into her sexuality and the coven was there for her to lean on, especially Alina. The witch coven were my favorite characters by far. They're intriguing and I am interested to see how they progress throughout the rest of this series. I think Blaez deserved so much better, and his big heart was abused. I wish nothing but the best for him.

Overall, a great read and I enjoyed it. I am excited for the rest of the novel, because I know it will only improve from here. I want to attach some of my favorite lines and ones I think summed up the story or were like a main theme from this, but it may include spoilers so just be forewarned if you consider quotes spoilers!!!

"Young women did not belong in the woods after dark."
"It's things that come out at night that are so much more exciting."
"With Alina by her side, Red felt safe for the first time in her life."
"They do not understand, and people fear what they do not understand."
"The lack of personalization mimicked her life: empty."
"I have never not been afraid."
"In this world, witches and women didn't get those types of choices. They didn't get to live those kinds of free lives. That was for men." :((
"Sometimes being so close to someone blinded you to who they really were."
"For the first time in her life, she felt peace."
"The only way to be protected from love is to have nothing to love."

Well, I have concluded that the quotes really don't spoil anything. Special thanks to BookSirens for providing me an arc of this book for a free review. I am writing this voluntarily.

I am actually really dumb guys. It is a twisted take on Little Red Riding Hood. Wow, I am so clueless. But just wanted to add that here if this seemed to remind you of something.

I love a vengeance/revenge story, even when that revenge comes centuries after the fact.

Blood Coven is a dark and thrilling ride through the woods.

I always appreciate the ability to describe something to the point where I can see, taste, and feel it. However, I had a hard time with the first couple of paragraphs. They felt wordy and bloated. After that though, I really started to enjoy the story.

Lovely themes of courage in the face of adversity, and a coming of age or a blossoming of sexuality. Red's story is tragic and powerful.

I did find a few inconsistencies that I felt were too glaring to ignore and because of that I could not give it the 4.5 stars that I wanted.

I'm thoroughly intrigued to find out where this series goes and will definitely pick it up. I'd buy this book for the cover alone (it is gorgeous!).

Thanks to BookSirens, Quill and Crow, and Sabrina Voerman for the free advanced read/review copy. My review is honest and voluntary.

In Blood Coven we are Given 2 different time lines to follow and while it was new and different than what I am use to in a book although I did find it losing my interest a few times and confusing me to the point I had to go back and re-read a few pages just to make sure I was following the right timeline. About 50-60% of the way through the book it finally started grasping my attention more and putting the pieces together. All around I think it was a good book and I am glad I read it. The Book took a little bit of time to get my full interest in the story but It was worth reading it.

I liked that it followed two time lines where one was the present that followed the Story of Red and then we had the story of Matthias which played in 400 years before hers. It is defenetly a great Book for someone who loves a good Dark Fairy tale retelling and Witches.
