I thought this book would never finish!
It was one of those stories in which there are no clues for the reader and the reader feels stupid and confused and the other characters in the book also are dense and don’t see what’s in front of them and ask stupid questions when the brilliant detective/journalist sheds light on something. Let’s say the detective says “the culprit went this way!”. His companion asks “how do you know that?” Dude, you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to see there are muddy footprints right in front of you!!!
Anyway, the very brilliant detective/journalist solves the mystery in the end. In fact from almost the beginning he knows who is the culprit and how he got out of the locked room, but for some reason he doesn’t divulge the solution, which by the way has not a hint of logic to it and makes us read all the rantings and technicalities over and over again.
Maybe it had been an interesting read at the time, I don’t know, but for me it was pure torture.

Far and away the best, most enjoyable locked room murder mystery novel I've read. To be fair, I've not read *a lot* of them, but this one is the easy standout of the bunch. The detective rivalry aspect is really fun, characters don't get backgrounded in favor of mechanical gimmicks, there are smart observations made every other page instead of having a pile of them at the very end and Rouletabille is a delight. Easy recommendation.

Hoy me ha pasado una cosa excepcional! bueno, no exageremos tampoco... Pero ha sido bastante emocionante. He encontrado el libro que dejé a medias hará unos 15 años y que tenía muchas ganas de saber como acababa!
Pero empezaré por el principio. Hace muuuuchos años, no sé si en 3º o 4º de EGB, la tutora nos llevaba una vez a la semana a la biblioteca, escogíamos un libro y lo leíamos. Y a la semana siguiente, volvíamos a la biblioteca a leer. Yo empecé a leer un libro que nunca había recordado como se llamaba, pero que me acordaba de que era la investigación de un intento de asesinato de una chica en una habitación que estaba cerrada por dentro. Me acordaba de que era como un libro de "época" porque hablaban antiguo, las señoritas llevaban vestidos largos y los señores chaqué. Bien, lo leí durante bastantes semanas, yo muy interesada en la resolución del caso (yo creo que era la única que realmente leía durante la hora de biblioteca… el resto se pasaba el rato jugando a los barquitos, a tirarse gomas o a dibujar. Siempre he sido un poco rara) ... Hasta que acabó el curso sin que yo acabase el libro. Después de vacaciones cuando volví a la escuela, busqué el libro en la biblioteca porque me había picado el gusanillo de saber como acababa... Y me fue totalmente imposible encontrarlo. Ya no estaba. Y con el tiempo, se me olvidó el título del libro.
Hoy estaba leyendo "Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres" de Stieg Larsson (que ya hablaré de él cuando lo acabe, pero de momento me gusta mucho) y en un momento dado comentan que tal asesinato es como el misterio de la habitación cerrada de los libros de Dorothy Sayers. Y a mí se me ha encendido la bombillita... y me he puesto a googlear. De la Sayers he saltado a un género específico de libros de misterio que se llama "locked room mistery", y de la lista de libros más famosos está "el misterio del cuarto amarillo" de Gaston Leorux escrito en 1907... qué ese es el libro que dejé a medias!!
Misterio resuelto. Ahora solo falta ver si no está descatalogado... ¡Por fin sabré cómo y porqué intentaron asesinar a la pobre Miss Stangerson en una habitación cerrada desde dentro y cómo logró escapar el asesino!!!

3rd read!!!!!! (this time : 90% audio book, 10% paper book)
i've read this story so many times within less than a couple of years and i was still shocked by some of these ending revelations... truly best court moment in the history of fiction. can’t wait to forget all of it before i finish reading the second one, thus forcing me to read this one again (again)! also, the logic is logicing and i love it. imo, a truly good mystery story makes you feel terrifyingly slow, not stupid to no end. and here everything makes so much sense, you kinda finish it feeling smarter for it than the opposite. still haven't finished reading the follow-up books, but rouletabille (as a character) kinda already surpasses both sherlock holmes and hercule poirot in my eyes! an icon.
