**as well as those grossed out or who have a fear of bugs, worms, and parasites
*there is also vivid descriptions of cadavers opened up & dead fetuses

Not my kind of horror. It went more the gross route than scary/spooky route.

The cover and how I’ve heard people talk about this made me have much different expectations. I thought it was going to be Stranger Things meets The Conjuring. But it was more just 80s pop culture references meets The Exorcist with some high school girl drama.

I was disappointed to say the least.

None of the characters were likable apart from Abby (well most of the time anyways) and her mother. All the adults apart from Abby’s mother are infuriating. And actually, this book infuriated me many MANY times, and left me feeling extremely grossed out & ill even more times than that.

I will give credit where credit is due, the last two pages were very sweet and lovely.

I think he was going for 80s campy horror movie but it just fell flat and like he didn’t fully commit either.

Don’t hate me but, dare I say, this was way overhyped

any book containing the phrase "Tommy Cox, defend us in battle," is an automatic win.
And then defeating the devil with a soda can, an eighties song, and the power of love is just the cherry on top.
Beautiful book, perfect cast, made me feel both happy and a little disgusted at the same time. A beautiful encapsulation of the 80s satanic panic.

This was good, but it was way too long. It’s hard for me to believe horrors need to be longer than 280-300 pages. The 80s vibes were immaculate, but, reading this in 2024, it’s hard to read the slurs used and the misinformation around the AIDS epidemic—even if it’s accurate to how ppl acted in the 80s

The horror was really good and gross and I enjoyed reading this, even if I don’t love that it’s a slow burn

Abby and Gretchen are the best of friends. They are inseparable as only childhood friends can be. When Gretchen starts acting weird, smelling, not hanging out with Abby, Abby knows that something is convinced that something bad happened to Gretchen.

Abby makes it her mission to help Gretchen no matter what. Gretchen is really going through it. Her parents are extremely religious and of course blame drugs. Both girls come from toxic homes in different ways.

The book was ok. I think it could have been shorter. There were a few things that were happening that I was just like, yeah I get it she's possessed.

This book had me ravenous. I couldn't wait to read the next part as I finished each chapter. The scares were well-written and often had me physically recoiling. I even had to put it down for a good ol' "nope" at one point. I might have to re-read this for my October scares.

I love Grady Hendrix’s writing and stories but I wish he could complete a book without including sexual assault.
