I read this book because of all the hype it received on TikTok. I personally don't think it lived up to the hype.

There are some scenes that might make your skin crawl, but I feel that this book is best framed as a comdey-horror.
If you're looking for something scary, this is not the book I'd recommend.
If you're wanting a light horror read, or to dip your toes into the genre, this is a good book for that.

I really disliked the inclusion of "slave day" during spirit week, as well as the mentioning of one character having done black face in a play in their youth.
These elements added absolutely nothing to the story/character development/etc and could've been left out without impacting the story line in anyway.

If you like "the power of friendship"-esque tropes, you may enjoy this story.

Also, this book has a bangin' 80s soundtrack.

This felt like Mean Girls mixed with Stranger Things and the Exorcist. It was fun, gross, happy and sad all over. The friendship between Gretchen and Abby was really admirable and the final chapter was so bittersweet. It truly felt like an 80s film in novel format.

I wasn’t too keen on some of the additions (without giving to much away - wasn’t happy about the Max situation in the end) and I feel that the ending wrapped up a bit too suddenly and without enough explanation in places. The owls while subtly mentioned weren’t mentioned enough, and the same with the old stories/ place in the woods. It would’ve been nice to have a bit more context in the ending to tie everything together but generally I feel Hendrix did a great job!

This is my second Grady Hendrix book and I found it to be such an enjoyable read. I loved that the book is like an 80's time capsule, complete with yearbook touches.
It's definitely a weird fever dream horror book, with a touch of humor and I couldn't be happier.
