I loved this book, and the ending did honestly bring me to tears from sweetness. It was a really nice friendship story.

The last lines in the book almost sent me into a spiral.

I do think this book is spoiled slightly by its title 😅 like it could at least be called something not as obvious…

I enjoyed the atmospheric descriptions and 80s references but unfortunately that was about it.

It is consistently referenced that Abby is smart throughout the book. Bitch??? No she is not, that girl lacks any common sense or intelligence imo.

I also didn’t enjoy the fact that Max was killed. I thought that was unnecessary - it didn’t really add anything to the story. Sure, it’s probably more upsetting because he was described as such a trusting dog, but it still was not really needed and added little to the story.

Also, there was no need for the Spirit Week part. Like if you know having a Slave Day is problematic, and you even REFERENCE this immediately after saying it, why even put it in there? Plus the constant slut shaming and approach to rape just was not it for me.

A tad disappointed as I was hoping to love this book more than I did. Overall, an okay book but slightly problematic and not something I think I would recommend to people.

**excuse the scatter brain review. I'm on my phone and multi tasking but wanted to write something before I forgot. I'll try to remember to do it from my computer next time.

**This was a book I bought based on recommendation from a bookstore employee and I'm not disappointed.

This falls into the horror genre but I love how the author took the time to develope the main character of the book and show what new friendship looks like.  The horror part is supernatural but not "watch out for the thing under your bed" after you're done scary.  It is still interesting and is based off the obsession and rumors around satanism in the 80s.

That being said, this book is based in North Carolina in the 80s in a wealthy area and has some of the discomforts to go along with it. They aren't a huge part of the story but passing mentions.

You'll also hear a lot about the music, hobbies, etc.  It's very authentic to the time and he really spent the time making the building of the friendship between the two main characters silly and fun, as it happens in real life.
