Camp Slaughter

This reads like a slasher movie, but better written. The characters are pretty well fleshed out and there are some gruesome scenes.

It’s a local legend. No one is sure if this “Camp Slaughter” place is real or not. But a group of college kids renting out a cabin deep in the woods of Pennsylvania will soon realize the truth. They’ll realize the danger, too. Or rather, the cannibal out in the woods will bring the danger to them…

This book is a slasher movie in the making! Holy smokes. Overall, I enjoyed reading CAMP SLAUGHTER (enough that I bought the book online - that cover is fabulous!) but I did have some hang ups that kept me from totally loving it.

Although I am a fan of horror novels (NOT movies. Can't do it!) the prologue was definitely a bit stomach churning. I feel that a lot of the book was heavy on the gore and light on the plot and I didn't connect with any of the characters, so I wasn't upset when the murderous rampage happened. I also thought that there were a lot of really great elements included in the story (cannibalism, paranormal activity, mediums, psychological trauma etc) and I would have enjoyed the story more if it focused on just a few of those aspects.

Gomez also did a lot of "telling" instead of "showing" writing, which didn't allow me to immerse myself into the book as much as I would have liked. However, this is just my personal preference and I know lots of people who are into slasher/horror flicks have adored this book.

Give it a try, I dare you to survive Camp Slaughter.

Somewhat predictable as far as slashers go, but it was a fun read! I think it started off pretty strong but so many characters got introduced where I had trouble keeping track of them all at times. And honestly… I didn’t care about half of them.

There were also moments where the killer, Varias Caras, seemed superhuman in that he had super hearing and could actually hear his victim’s hearts beating, making it easier to track them down which I thought was a bit weird and unnecessary, as well as the fact that he just wouldn’t die! Michael Myers who?

I want to also note there was a very weird line about one of the characters being non sexual towards another character, never talking about marriage, sexy relationships, etc, and is described as “an asexual alien” which felt very unnecessary as well, it did nothing for the story - we already knew that character was *different* due to his job and interests so describing him as some weird alien who never made a pass at his partner was kinda dumb and didn’t add anything to the story.

This was so good! It was creepy and gory and scary and just ... awesome! I loved all the different POV's. I thought at first they weren't all nesissary, but they were all valuable to the story. I did appreciate the ending. No spoilers, but I thought that was a great ending. I'm excited to read the next one, but I think I'll read it closer to Halloween.

1.5 stars - 1 dimensional characters, killer leatherface rip off, just written badly to be honest.

The literary equivalent of an 80s slasher movie. That was so much damn fun!
