I eagerly purchased Hidden Pictures for my 2023 TBR shortly after it won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Horror in 2022. I am appalled that this book not only was nominated but won the award given its hidden extreme right propaganda. I was disgusted to be surprised by a plot full of transphobia, religious elitism, fatphobia, racial stereotypes, and hidden political propaganda. I will not be giving this book a proper review as I do not recommend anyone read it and wish I could take my money back from having supported it.

Wowee Zowee! This book was off the hinges!!! 😩I was not expecting this much from this book. I am usually so good at catching the twists and turns of books but none of my predictions/theories were true!

This book follows Mallory, a young girl who is currently 18 months sober. She was previously addicted to heroin and oxy but has since changed her life around. She gets this incredible opportunity to work as a nanny for a wealthy family. She even gets her own cottage in their backyard, free for her to stay while she is paid to babysit the only child, a little boy by the name of Teddy. Initially, everything is going in Mallory's favor. The parents, Caroline and Ted, (who initially were a little nervous about hiring an ex-drug addict) have come to trust her, Teddy is over-thrilled with her, Mallory has a secure home/income, and she even has a new routine she follows to stick with her sobriety. The only issue is Teddy's imaginary friend, Anya.

Is Anya really a made-up friend that Teddy plays with or is she a supernatural being that needs to be heard? Mallory is the only person that wants to get to the bottom of this, finding clues in drawings that "Teddy" has created.

This book had me completely engulfed! Mallory plays the perfect unreliable narrator, keeping you questioning every aspect of this book. At one point I wasn't even sure if the whole family was even real! Is this all just a bad dream??! I'm not telling, definitely check this one out if you ever have the chance.

Wow. Hidden Pictures is just creepy enough, well-paced, and kept me on the edge of my seat. The twist shocked me and I didn't see it coming!
I am so happy that the ending was good and only Caroline and Ted die. I was so sad when it was almost Mallory, but the ending is just what you are hoping for. So glad about the whole thing!
