This mystery/thriller, set in Denmark, read similarly to a "Criminal Minds" episode, while Carl, the main detective, reminded me a bit of House M.D. in his laissez-faire and apathetic take on his job. Carl returns to his job at the Copenhagen police department suffering from PTSD and survivor's guilt after surviving a fatal shooting. Already unpleasant, no one really wants to work with him, so the homicide director names him the head of Department Q -- taking one last look at cold cases before closing them out. With the help of his assistant Assad, he begins to look into the strange disappearance of a young female politician 5 years prior. With further inspection, the case appears to have investigative holes, leaving them with more questions in an already puzzling case.

I enjoyed the dual-POV, where some chapters were written from the victim's perspective, building the suspense and adding to the mystery. The novel had many references to Danish politics, many of which may have made more sense if I had more background. I didn't really like Carl at first, but as the story developed, so did his character. I was hooked by the mystery and enjoyed the peek into Danish culture through the narrative.
