TDLR: Could have been a phenomenal book, but was just… meh.

Let me be clear, the plot is great. It’s well-paced, the twists are clear in hindsight but a surprise when you read them, everything ties together nicely, and I couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to know what would happen.

But that’s about it. And a book with a plot but nothing else is just a plot, it’s not a book. I could have read the summary on Wikipedia and gotten the same thing out of it because there’s nothing more to it than that.

The characters have absolutely no development because they CAN’T develop; they aren’t given any substance to begin with. There is zero character or relationship building between or within any of them. It’s like the author started planning out her characters and then forgot to finish after she got past writing down all of their names. They’re typecast to hell, and have no depth, no nuance, no personality. They serve the plot, the plot does not serve them. And honestly, they aren’t even likable. I was annoyed at all of them halfway through and skimmed more than I did read because the characters were lackluster and writing was subpar.

It’s unfortunate that this book was written by this author because I think a more skilled author could have used this concept and made it an emotional, complex, character-driven story. Instead, we have whatever this is.

I couldn’t stop trying to get to the end, but when I finally finished, my first thought was: oh. That’s it?
