Note: only read river of teeth.

This was weird and wacky and I enjoyed the twists and turns.

I would have enjoyed this book more if it was not for the character of Hero. As a nb person, I felt like the way their character was portrayed throughout the novel was not the kind of representation I’d like to see. Also, it is set in the late 1800s and the subject of race isn’t addressed once, despite many of the characters being people of color.
Hero is the only nb character in the whole book. They are afab, sidelined almost immediately upon the mission starting, and they are still put into a romantic interest/childcare role at the end of it all. It felt very stereotypical to the way things would play out for the female lead in a western.

Very fun heist caper + revenge + diversity + romance + hippos in the Wild West except in the Louisiana Bayou. Very entertaining, very well-written. I only knocked off the star because of one setting logistics issue in River of Teeth (Houndstooth comes to find Cal in the Harriet and then they leave the Harriet in order to go in a big circle?? Or something?? For fun?? In order to come back to the Harriet, with Houndstooth pointing out that Travers would never have let him into the Harriet before that moment.) and because of my emotional struggles in Taste of Marrow. I just need my children to be happy and nice to each other!! Highly recommend.

Sarah Gailey hitting it out of the park as always with all the queer feels and also hippos and cycles of revenge. This book was everything, and I wish I could read more about these characters because I love them all so so much. (as you can see I love these stories to the point of incoherency. I'll stop now)
