Beautifully written, heartfelt novel set in a small, quiet Midwestern town. Explores love and loss, family and friendship, purpose and meaning, faith and doubt. A wonderful book worth your time.

It had some really lovely moments and good characters, it just lacked any forward movement and ended way too abruptly.

This book is just a teensy bit too obviously in love with Gilead and Annie Dillard (both of which are name-checked). It's like going to a concert where the cover band is doing all your favorites -- the first 15 min are great and you're so delighted to be with others who love all the same music you love, but then it all seems a little too easy or cliched. You start thinking you should just go home and listen to the original band. I do think there should be more Gilead cover-bands, but this one grated for me. The coffee isn't just coffee, it's "good" coffee. They aren't just cookies, they're "a dozen" cookies. There's always a train in the distance at just the right time. It's so quaint and folksy I just want to chat about it at the next church potluck. I like church potlucks! And yet.
