This was a great read! I love the way that the author foreshadows the twist at the end in plain sight and you can feel all the slight oddities but, just like Claudia, it's easy to sweep them under the rug. Great characters, very emotional and tragic, and strangely hopeful at the same time.

I had a hard time putting this book down. There is a lot of back and forth in the book (past to present). Writer did a good job of making it easy to follow when this happens. I want to warn you if you’re not into child abuse this wouldn’t be the book for you, writer doesn’t go into detail which was nice but does a good job of letting you know that it’s happening . All and all it was a good read, did get pissed off a few times, if you read the book you’ll find out why

I’d been dying to read this one since hearing so many recs for it. I kept hearing how powerful the story was and how readers cried through the ending. I enjoyed the read & although I didn’t cry, the ending was very emotional and heartbreaking. Definitely violence & death triggers. But I like at the very end how it touched on how we have a choice as to the way we view things. “Instead of hearing a buzz hear the hum of a beautiful melody.” That really stuck out to me. Instead of seeing the horrible trauma of a situation, figure out how to see the beauty in it. I also got how important it is to have a friend or people in your corner. She had a guy who loved her deeply and was able to carry her when she physically mentally and emotionally was unable to carry herself. She was a tough cookie and even though she had some self doubt issues and insecurities with dyslexia she exuded confidence without even knowing or realized how others see her. Enjoyed the book.

This broke my heart. A story of friendship and children being failed by our system. My heart aches.

Definitely not an easy read. But it kept me engaged and wanting to go back to reading it for the most part. And also the way it's constructed, it almost wanted me to go back and re-read.

Another case of great concept and poor execution. It started out strong but I was a little confused about Claudia‘s age since I’m not familiar with the American school system (and don’t care enough to learn). She felt like she was 12 at most. 14-16 year olds aren’t stupid enough to dismiss obvious signs of abuse, especially when it’s your best friend.
It becomes pretty clear what happened to Monday early on but didn’t understand why the adults acted the way they did and that reveal successfully ruined the book. I can’t say how believable it is to forget the last two years of your life more than once but why did NO ONE tell her? She was clearly suffering from it and the adults decided it was best to dismiss her pain and let her struggle?
