I am IN LOVE with this book! I loved the writing style, the characters, the story, everything.

I felt that I was whisked away to Mallow Island and the Dellawisp condos from the very first chapter, and I did not want to leave. This is a lovely story about the residents of the Dellawisp, with a tinge of underlying mystery. There were several twists throughout, some that made my jaw drop, and some that I figured out. But figuring out the twists really didn’t detract from the story at all, it almost enhanced it as if the author was giving us a peek into what was coming. I admit I cried more than a few times reading this one. Who knew I could get so emotional over birds and cornmeal. IYKYK 😉. Other Birds had so many beautiful quotes throughout, it was truly a wonderful read.

Found family with a touch of magical realism is just my thing! There were some bits of this novel that were entirely predictable but that made them no less enjoyable. Also had several "twists" I didn't see coming, not sure if that's because they're genuinely surprising or if it was more due to the fact that I wasn't really trying to figure anything out. Really easy book to read and could easily be finished in a day, though I chose to drag it out a bit as I was really loving it. Even though the novel touches on some harder issues it's never in a gratuitous way, for me it simply made me love and connect to the characters even more. There is a minor romance subplot which is very sweet and cute. I'm not someone who really needs that element to enjoy this type of book, in fact I often find it frustrating as it starts to be distracting, but I loved that it simply gave me some moments to go "awww" at without taking over the entire story.

This book was SLOW.  For the first 60% I was worried nothing was going to happen and couldn't figure out the point of anything. It finally picked up around 74% and I don't regret reading it, but there a few loose ends that didn't get tied up.  I'm also not sure what the point of the birds was in this book. It felt like a forced metaphor and I'm not sure it added anything to the book.

I can't figure out why the author chose to have so many older men preying on young girls but then mention that the young girl was aware she was being manipulated.  The lack of commentary on these toxic relationships was at odds with the underlying message of the whole book, which seemed to be that love can and should be given without expecting anything in return. </Spoiler>
