CW: death, alcohol/drug use, addiction, violence, abuse, pregnancy & sex work mentioned. one character practices the art of henna, both for work & for pleasure, which may read as cultural appropriation to some readers.

this book was overall a wonderful read. it has found family, ghosts, grief, love, and coming of age at different points in ones life. a multi-pov book with a little bit of a mystery and hard to put down. i laughed a bit, rooted for the residents of the dellawisp, and got a bit emotional with the ending. i definitely recommend this one, especially if you enjoy a contemporary novel with a little magical realism sprinkled in.

Picture a warm hug of a found family story set in a Melrose Place-esque apartment building on an SC island. Then mix in well-meaning ghosts, food as love, magical realism, and the theme of grief. Other Birds is one of my favorite kinds of books, a novel that addresses weighty topics while maintaining a hopeful tone. It is such a lovely book and well worth a read. Read if you enjoy: magical realism, found family stories, Southern authors, food writing

A really good found family, coming of age story.  Some of the turns taken were predictable, but much like a comfort movie even knowing some turns did not diminish the pleasure I took in reading it. Other turns I did not see coming and had a few OH! moments. Beautiful scenery, lots of description. Overall a very lovely read.

I adore the found family aspect of this book. It’s devastating that they all felt so unloved as children, but I’m so glad they all found each other at the Dellawisp. I was so invested in finding out their back stories and rooting for all of their happiness.
The “ghost stories” were interesting and unique. I enjoyed the history and point of view each one offered.

Started off slower than her other books but nearing the end I got incredibly invested in her characters and was sad to leave the world.
