I really like the setting of this! I haven't read very may YA books with this setting, and I liked it more than I expected to. It was really refreshing to read.

My favorite part of the whole book, though, was the main character. I've read many, many books where the MC has to dress up as a boy to get something she wants, so that didn't add anything new for me, but I loved Lee's determination to keep going. She was smart, witty, and never played the victim. I need more YA protagonists like her!

It was a little slow thanks to the nature of the plot and the journey they were on, but I think the next book will be more exciting.

I'll be honest I haven't read much historical fiction infact the ones I have tried to read have kind of been a little dull so I've avoided the genre for a few months but Walk on Earth a Stranger appealed to me well mostly because of little hint of fantasy in it and this book also covers a bit of US history that I was curious about.

A summery for Walk on Earth a Stranger:

Gold is in my blood, in my breath, even in the flecks of my eyes.

Lee Westfall has a strong, loving family. She has a home she loves and a loyal steed. She has a best friend-who might want to be something more.

She also has a secret.

Lee can sense gold in the world around her. Veins deep in the earth. Small nuggets in a stream. Even gold dust caught underneath a fingernail. She has kept her family safe and able to buy provisions, even through the harshest winters. But what would someone do to control a girl with that kind of power?

A person might murder for it.

When everything Lee holds dear is ripped away, she flees west to California-where gold has just been discovered. Perhaps this will be where a magical girl can be herself. If she survives the journey.

This is the first Rae Carson book I've read and I enjoyed it a great deal and for once it was a piece of historical fiction with a fantasy twist and that made things easier I guess and this book was quite easy to get once you get used to the terms used so in a way you wind up reading this book in a accent because that's what I found even though I can't quite put a finger on the accent though not that I mind anyway as I enjoyed the journey Lee went through but I am curious to see the future development of her in the next two books and where Rae Carson plans on moving the story forward only problem is I now have to wait until 2016 to find out.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. The only problem I had with it was that it felt like it slowed down in the middle and I had to push through. But the beginning and ending were wonderful, definitely worth pushing through a slow middle!

Quick read, very well done, with a strong, interesting, conflicted female lead and a lot of strong background in history and human personalities.

was kind of surprised that Carson's latest trilogy (after the Girl of Fire and Thorns books) was set in the historical US, and not in a fantasy world like her previous books. But she still includes a magical element--our heroine has the ability to sense gold, which is super handy, as the California Gold Rush has just started. A lot of this book stressed me out--her journey west is fairly harrowing--but in general, it just didn't quite grab me the way her first series did. Carson lays the groundwork for the future books, and I'm sure I'll at least give the next one a chance, but her characters are a little flat and the end of this one didn't really leave me wanting more. I mean, it's good, just not GREAT. B/B+.

I really liked this book, but it felt more like a prequel than a first instalment. This whole novel felt like a setup of Leah's character and surrounding friends.

I was expecting a lot more gold finding with her seeking abilities. I was also expecting a lot more sneaky, slimy businessmen trying to take advantage of Leah. This book was mostly about Leah and her journey from Georgia to California to get to the Gold Rush.

That being said, I still did really like this book. Leah was a great character to read about, as were all of her friends and travelling companions. Rae Carsons writing is awesome! I know I would have liked this book a lot more if I had expected what this book was actually about.

A great historical fantasy that oozes southern charm. A definite recommended read. :)

I was trying to get hit in the feels the way "The Madman's Daughter" hit me. I enjoyed it but not in an emotional way.

I enjoyed this book! It had the content that really excites me, but I think it could have been executed much better. The quality of the story was sort of bare, with lots of easy, unrealistic occurrences there just to move the plot along. (I mean, how many coincidences for seeing people in different parts of a wide, wide country can there be?!) I liked the characters enough, but they didn't have much depth. The writing was uninteresting in style. But I enjoyed the entertainment aspect, though if I wasn't such an ~oregon trail lover, the atmosphere probably wouldn't have held it together like it did.

I never knew that I wanted to learn more about the Gold Rush. Now I do. This book was beautifully written, with a story that resonated and characters who lived and breathed. I feel like I was along for the journey as I experienced their triumphs and tragedies. This book is proof that Rae Carson is a genius.
