Loved reading this book again, loved Lee, she was such a great character, who goes through a lot of hardship and loss, and I loved the family that she found!

Awesome book, loved the characters and this world, and I can't wait to read more of this series!

Leah Westfall might just be my new favorite heroine. Throughout the story, she faced so many hardships like many who migrated west during this time. Although it wasn't those points of the story I enjoyed the most. Leah's need to be wanted and not owned is what really drew me in. I highly suggest picking this up if you are searching for a fast paced, girl-powered historical fiction novel! I can't wait to see how Leah's story plays out in the rest of the series!

The comparisons to Oregon Trail are right on. Exactly what I thought while reading this. And while I loved the game I wasn't sure how I would feel about the book version but I really enjoyed it.

Side note: did anyone else think it was funny the confirmed bachelor's were headed to San Francisco?

I almost didn't continue reading after the first three pages but I'm glad I did! It was very interesting.

Protože pak si to užijete.

This book felt like it would never end. The western vibe hooked me at first, but as time went on, this felt less like a cohesive narrative and more like a game of The Oregon Trail gone horribly wrong. There's very little plot to speak of here, and while there is a touch of magical realism in here, it's so subtle that it may as well not have been there. Overall, I don't see myself continuing on with this series.

I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't as fantastical/magical as I thought it would be. That's definitely not a bad thing though with the way this story is going. I enjoyed much more than I thought I would. I've never really read anything set in this time period and it was quite interesting for the POV to be from a teenage girl who isn't so "proper."

This book had me hooked from the first chapter itself. Even though this is my third western this year and the plot shares similarities to the other two I read (Vengeance Road and Under a Painted Sky), it was a very enjoyable read (and these three have now got me hooked to the Western genre!).

Leah Westfall is a character you will want to get behind. Her journey for the most part is lonesome and full of perils. She is brave, strong and a quick learner. She also has a secret and a tonne of sadness. Rae Carson did a real good job with her MC. I loved how much time you get to spend with Leah without the distractions of romance. There is romance, of course, and this is only the first in a trilogy, but I did like the fact that it was secondary to Leah's story and journey.

This is an action-packed and at times, heartbreakingly gory book. I am really looking forward to books 2 and 3 now.

I loved this book it was told in a way that was completely captivating I felt for everything that our main character had to go through her joys and hardships. I liked the story and all the characters and how the story was written I just can not wait to read more.

Rae Carson is a wonderful writer and her first trilogy is one of my all time favorites. This first book was unfortunately a bit of disappointment to me. I wasn't as invested in the plot and I found the main character to be frustrating at times.
