Wild West meets magic. Gold finding powers seem like a great thing to have, until people start killing for them.
As a product of my generation, the game Oregon Trail was my jam as a child. And this book is kind of like the story made version of it which was fun. Sure, it's much more complicated than that good ole game but the essence was there. And I liked that. Westerns in YA seem to be making a comeback (or a footing, I don't know) and that's pretty damn cool. This book progressed well. I really enjoyed the main character, Leah. She was smart and really fit the story well. She was believable.
The entire book, character and setting, was well done. You can tell the author cared about the timing of the story and while sure some things might possible be inaccurate (I didn't notice anything but I'm no historian) it all felt authentic to me and interesting as well. I'm already looking forward to book 2.

I seriously think the audiobook improved my enjoyment of this book. I'm surprised I like it so much because I was expecting a fantasy and this has more of a historical and western feel.
I love the characters. The storytelling of the book drew me in immediately. I could feel Leah and her parent's connection early in the story. All the characters seemed real.
I reread this in preparation to read the entire series. I can't wait to start the next book!!

The narrator for this audiobook,Erin Mallon, was fantastic! Seriously, this was the best audiobook I have listened to ever.

It was new, and different. It dragged so much gosh. Although, I'm curious on what exactly goes on in the next book. The plot wasn't that hard to guess.

This book was a very fun read for me! I wasn't really sure if I would enjoy this due to the fact that its historical fiction with a little bit of fantasy mixed in. I wasn't sure how well those would mesh especially for this time period. It was definitely a pleasant surprise! I found myself very immersed in the story, although I do wish the characters, especially Jefferson had been a bit more developed. Overall this was a very enjoyable read!
I completely adored this! It had absolutely everything I want in a book: pioneer-era history, magic, hints of romance, emotional punches that don’t hold back, and a kickass protagonist. I haven’t felt this close to a protagonist in ages, but I love Leah so much! Basically, this book was so, so great. Highly recommend!

Honestly it's just fun. I don't really understand the fantasy element because it seems to barely be important right now ~ I will be picking up the rest of the series and I do love Rae's storytelling.
