Initial Thoughts upon Finishing
This was so much fun! Snyder has once again delivered us a brilliant piece of work and is simply unputdownable. It was such a quick read with a really great plot, and the story delivered in all the ways I wanted it to. Whilst it's a somewhat long-ish book (about 450 pages), I flew through it. It's an addictive read and all I wanted was to know how it ended. I cannot put into words how keen I am for book two!
Full review to come.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked it up but got hooked quickly. Great fun!
My first dip into sci-fi/dystopian and I'm hooked. Absolutely loved it and will be diving into the next one after a cuppa
I'm a great fan of Maria V. Snyder's fantasy books so I was excited to see what she would do in the YA sci-fi genre and she didn't disappoint. This was a fun and clever story with plenty of action, witty banter and likeable characters.
The story follows 17 year old Lyra Daniels as she has to adjust to moving to another planet...again. This is all thanks to the Q-net which allows for space travel. It also has a down side...time dilation. While for Lyra only 90 days will pass in transit, 50 years will pass for the friends she leaves behind. This made for an interesting social plot point as we see how Lyra has to deal with such life altering changes, although I would have loved if had been explored even more in depth than it was.
The story is written from her P.O.V and she is such a fun and likeable character to follow. Her observations and humour had me cracking up at times. Watching her trying...and failing not to form any new attachments because it hurts too much gave me great sympathy for her character.
When they reach the planet, her parents and the rest of the team will be investigating the Terracotta Warriors which have been found on several different planets. Watching them try to solve the mystery and the twists that came after made for an enjoyable read. I cannot wait to see where Snyder takes the story in book 2.

This is great. Snarky flawed MC who sounds like her age!
Terrific love interest who is also snarky.
Strong mystery with action all the way through.
Very happy read.

I picked up Navigating the Stars one day because I was in my favourite bookstore and as per usual, couldn't resist buying a book. I don't regret it. Firstly, the cover is stunning! I'm a sucker for pretty books and this doesn't disappoint. I also love a good sci-fi. It's quite YA so if that bothers you, don't read it. It was a fun book with a really fascinating premise — it follows Lyra, a biracial (although race isn't a thing in space, you're all just earthians) seventeen year old miscreant who's parents are archaeologists that study the Terracotta Warriors, albeit not the ones on earth. The ones on the dozens of planets in the milky way that the humans have no explanation how or why they got there. Even Lyra's mum and dad can't agree on a theory and this is their area of expertise. Anyway, basically it's kind of your usual teenage miscreant hacker type gets recruited to use her talents for good and uncover secrets and stop criminal masterminds. Except with the added bonus of archaelogy and aliens. The archaeology part of it is really cool even though I did think it could've been touched on more? Like there were sort of references to Chinese culture and how the warriors were meant to protect in the afterlife and thus were more than statues and there's a discovery that the statues had hearts but it was kind of brushed off? ig in favour of the action based plots where looters came in and wrecked havoc etc. Maybe it'll be explored more in book 2 because it was really cool.
The romance was fairly bland, not bad but I didn't feel like there was much chemistry. I loved the family dynamics!!! Honestly aside from the romance I loved all Lyra's relationships, from her actual parents to her pseudo dad to the partners in crime fighting she makes along the way. They were super cute. Overall a fun, easy read good for fans of the Illuminae Files! If you liked Kady Grant, you'll like Lyra. (Sidenote but I hated the names of almost everyone in the book, especially the boyfriend Niall but that's a superficial complaint).
