I enjoyed getting to know Elias's past; it gives so much context to Half a Soul and later stories I expect. I enjoyed that Elias tried being a father anyway and I respect him so much for that. He will be great because he listened to Abigail and her fear.

There is a lot packed into this short story! It is simultaneously heartwarming & heartbreaking. It is ultimately a story about parenthood and Elias’ determination to be and do better than his father. Growing up with an abusive and unstable faerie father, he never really got to be a child. His father did everything he could to make Elias fear him. Lord Swiftburn blames Elias instead of taking responsibility for his failures. I think Swiftburn burns with the hope of destroying it’s Lord.
