This is an entertaining, though unremarkable, Star Trek adventure. Author Vonda McIntyre, a prolific writer who made her name in tie-in novels, gets the TOS vibe and understand the characters.

If you’re in the market for a Trek adventure that won’t blow your mind but will entertain you, this book is for you.

This was so much fun and I loved it. I agree with other reviews that say the beginning is slow, but I didn’t mind, as I just get to hang out with my favorite characters for a while before the action really picks up. And once it does pick up, it’s buck wild and delightful.

There are so many little character moments throughout that I just loved and I was smiling while reading nearly the whole time. McCoy is particularly excellent—for Reasons, he is temporarily given command, and he’s terrible at it and I love that for him. The OCs are also very charming and add a lot to the verse.

All in all, a great Trek book.

This was not a very good episode of the series, and I would rate it only acceptable. While it is always nice to follow more adventures of our favorite characters, this story was a bit disjointed and the characters actions didn't always ring true to those in the TV series. Also the story was unnecessarily confusing at times only remedied by a very convenient tying-up-lose-ends finale.

I only picked this up because it was in an op shop for $2, and as an illustrator I find some inspiration in these painted covers. Now with Covid19 lockdown upon us and lots of time to spare, I put it on my reading pile. Its not a great Trek novel by any means, and honestly the first half reads like a repressed romance novel, but it picks up about halfway and gets into some time travel shenanigans, McCoy drinks too much, so nothing much that's too unusual, and was a pleasant enough diversion, if a tad dated in it's extrapolation. Sulu rocks long hair and a groovy moustache, so whats not to like?

The audiobook eliminates the Sulu plot which was really my favorite part! Still fun, but I definitely missed it.
