Great beginning, wonderful characters, would have been a 4 star except it crash ended (literally).

I enjoyed this story. It had a "cozy" novel feel, but is not one. I felt the ending was a little flat, but I enjoyed the character of Bess and liked the fact that there was no "romance" involved in this mystery. I would read another in this series.

I'm so thankful I found this series after finishing Maisie Dobbs! Despite the similarities, Bess Crawford, our heroine/detective, has her own style and endearments. I've plowed through the series on audiobook and I suggest you do the same!

An earnest protagonist, a family mystery, overlong and in need of focus.

So excited to have stumbled on the first book of this series! Such a great mystery with a great cast of characters. Definitely going to be reading the others

The first installment of the Bess Crawford series was a great read! Set during WWI in England, it follows nurse Bess as she delivers a personal message of a dead soldier to one of his brothers. While the message itself was mysterious, the reactions of his family are even more so. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery which kept me guessing for quite some time and loved the character of Bess. I can't wait to read the next book in the series and find out what happens next to Bess.

Not very many of the novels I read are set in WWI. I really enjoyed this mystery. It was well written, gave enough details of war without just telling us the research the author did and was really well crafted. I have the next book already in my TBR queue.
