In the third instalment of the Mackenzie troop series, we’re marrying off one of the youngest sons.
Boy, this book is something. I’m not sure what, but it’s something. The stories synopsis starts with ‘Barrie needs a saviour’, and its true. She’s been kidnapped by terrorists and is being held in a remote location, and she’s naked. For some reason.
Anyway, in comes our saviour Zane, a highly decorated Navy SEAL, who comes in and does his job – he gets her out to a safe location where they have to lie low for a wee while until they can join the rest of his team. At which point Barrie decides this is the perfect time to lose her virginity.
Both characters have a bit of background, but its fairly shallow and generic and the chemistry between them is disappointing. They do however make some really odd decisions. Barrie’s rational for wanting to do the horizontal tango is to scare away the demons or whatever, but why on earth would Zane, a trained professional, agree to this? He makes a big point of ‘not being caught with his trousers…off’ but is more than happy to get her naked in the middle of enemy territory.
After they get back and she’s shipped off to her father like a sack of potatoes, her father says the only sensible thing in the whole book and tells her that her newfound ‘love’ is just lust and to grow up. But nooooo it’s true love and she heads off to Virginia to sulk until Zane recovers and comes to rescue her.
The premise of this book was so great, but instead we got 200 pages of superficial love with story that rapidly turned limp. I know insta-love holds the heart of many romance readers, including myself, but this was a whole different scale of insta. The relationship was unrealistic and developed at the actual speed of life, BUT if you like a book with lots of horizontal tangoing and don’t mind the story taking a backseat, this will be right up your street.

why wasn't THIS one called mackenzie's mission??? huh??? 50% of this book was a MISSION YA'LL PLEASE. ugh anyway, this was so insta-love that i don't even want to talk about it. it was insane. im glad to finish this in one day but im not glad that the romance also started and ended (in marriage) in one day as well. like pls. anyway good for barrie! another strong(ish... she kinda folded immediately) woman! her escaping the hotel to call her dad was freeing. wish the book had more scenes of HER being a badass instead of zane. epilogue was really cute tho!! im excited for chance's book!

I laughed so much and I enjoyed Zane more than I thought I would (he reminded me so much of Wolfe!). Barrie was a nice balance (seems she’s the only one besides Nick to give Zane a run for his money which was perfect). If I had one critique I wish it were longer. There’s so much of their relationship I would have liked to explore in more detail but I’m glad the miscommunication trope wasn’t used which made the story a quick fun read. I couldn’t have asked for a better ending - it was hilarious and a perfect end to Zane & Barrie’s story.

Starts out with kidnapping and rescue, surprise virginity-losing. Oh no, bullet and separation! Whoops the virgin is pregnant, we must get married. Dad is spy? CIA, SEALs, not-so-spoiled rich girl. Sprawling family.
Warning for gunshots and wounds, stepping on a sharp thing in gross stuff, bad and dead parents, kidnapping and threat of rape.

When Navy SEAL Zane Mackenzie is called on to rescue Barrie Lovejoy from a kidnapping, he doesn't realise that this is going to be a complicated rescue particularly for his heart.
It's an interesting and very readable story.
