Only polite thing to say here is that it was not my cup of tea. It was sort of okayish read. Entertaining just for the part that it was something different from all other books I tend to read. But I did hate the inconsistencies of the things written on the cover and in the overview with what was really in the book, that is just pure scheming and lies.

I struggled a bit to sympathise with the main character in this book, particularly as he seemed to be going round shooting people. However, once the story took over and the plot picked up pace, it was a good read.

You know that a Simon Kernick novel is going to grab your attention from the very first sentence and this doesn't disappoint. Your thrust straight into the action as the main character Dan Tyler wakes up to find the decapitated body of his new girlfriend lying next to him in a pool of blood in a place he doesn't recognise and with no memory of the events leading up to it. He then finds himself doing a job for a mysterious man who tells him that if he doesn't complete the job the murder weapon and video of him committing the crime will go straight to the police. There then follows a series of events that ultimately become a little too predictable and increasingly outrageous. The characters are wooden and clichéd and the narration suffers from to much hyperbole and altogether useless information that adds nothing to plot and leaves you with the feeling that he is desperately trying to slow the story down for added suspense. It doesn't work.

The first time I read Severed I was much, MUCH too young to be reading it. I blame the guy working the till that day. Regardless, I'm glad I got the chance to grab it because I still think about it even all these years later, and this was probably the start of my love for gore and horror/thrillers.

Full of twists, gore and shocks, I recommend this if you're interested in a quick, wild read. Definitely gorier than your usual crime novel, but has the same investigation style as you'd expect from them. Great read!

This book reminded me of video games for some reason, maybe because of how the shooting was described. Not the best book ever but amusing and fun.

Very good read, he did go on about the army a little too much at times, I did actually end up skipping those bits. Towards the end when it was all coming together, I couldn't put it down!
