It's a good book. I enjoyed reading it but the whole modern war and plague trope is just not my style and so at times i wouldn't enjoy it or feel interested.I didnt feel like I was in the book.
If you like this trope though, then you would definitely enjoy this book. The world building and character building were amazing too.

Despite the fact that I liked this book, I had several issue with it when I finished it. First and foremost the "whodunit" plot line was predictable. As soon as Metias gets killed, I figured out who did it. Secondly, I felt like the secondary characters lacked depth and development, specifically Thomas and Kaede. I didn't quite understand a lot, if any of their motivations and I found myself getting irritated with them whenever they showed up. Thomas' sudden interest in June seemed to come out of nowhere considering how he acted towards her at the beginning of the book.
Finally, I wish there was more world building. I understand that this is dystopian and set in LA, but I felt that there was something missing from the descriptions of the city itself, other than there were 'high rise' rich districts and the poor district, and how the society worked, that would have helped to make the novel more engrossing. Things were hinted at, the floods/hurricanes for example, the Trials, but how this dystopian society came to be was never really explained, and neither was the appearance of the plague or why there was a Trial/how that started.

I know that the latter is part of the plot, but part of me feels like, considering the part it played in the lives of both characters, there should have been more of a set up.

I'm not sure yet whether I'm going to read the second book or not. Day and June were interesting enough (though even they had their bland moments) and I am really curious about
Spoilerthe Elector's son (despite him only being there for two seconds, he intrigued me much more most of the other characters combined
, but unless the world is fleshed out more, I don't know if I can invest myself further in the story.

4 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a surprisingly quick read that I was able to read in just a few hours. There's a lot of fast paced action and both of the main characters, Day and June, were likeable and interesting. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 star is because the relationship between the two felt a little rushed. It wasn't insta-love or anything like that, but it could have been a bit better with the pacing in my opinion. However, while the romance/attraction could have used better pacing, I believe the trust formed between them was done well.

I have a lot of books lined up so I can't go reading the sequel right away, but I have added it on my want to read list.

Post apocalyptic, young adult with a classic plot that is elevated by the writing. While the full story was pretty predictable, I still loved it. I love the way Marie Lu writes and have found every single one of her novels and graphic novels to be engaging. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

This was so fun.
But that’s mainly it.
This book was shoved down our throats when i was a teen and the characters glorified. They felt bland. This was genuinely so fun however. Hence the rating. It was also fast and easy to get through. A good distraction with all that’s going on in my life rn.
