Very slow-paced book, I had trouble getting through it, especially at first. But I’m really glad I did; I feel like I learned and so much and felt what the characters felt. Incredible writing.

It took me quite a while to get through this book. The first half of the book is dedicated to setting the slow-paced life in Montana Cameron finds herself trapped in.

Grieving, lonely, curious and troublesome we spend the Summer with Cameron as she explores her sexuality, much to the chagrin of her conservative and religious family and community.

While this book could have gone so many directions with this story, it was a Bildungsroman that stayed true to the genre. Despite the circumstances she later finds herself in, surprisingly, Cameron is finally able to define for herself her identity and who she is without the judgment from her community and family.

I wish the book tied up certain storylines and situations better, although the ending tried to be hopefully and reflective of the journey Cameron had been on/ was still going on, I wish it explored the “what happens next” further.

I can’t say I enjoyed reading, but more like I didn’t mind reading it to pass the time.

Thank gd for this book. It’d been a long time since a book was a full 5 stars from me. This book reminded me what good YA feels like: sharp yet entertaining prose, the humor there, the arc strong, the metaphors intricate and visual. It’s got found family, too. This’ll probably actually be the new go-to when I recommend my friends a YA read. Just painful (but not only!) and perfect.

I give this book a 2.75/5. I have many questions, such as:
• Why was every girl she met gay?
•Why did she get no closure with Irene, was she even over her?
•How did she not drown from her muscles locking up at the end?
There are many more but I don’t feel like listing them right now. I also just wasn’t engrossed with her writing style. There were too many run on sentence, in my opinion. Lastly, she described herself as a loner at school but every girl she became friends with (except for Jane) liked her, and so did one of the boys. It just felt like she was a Mary Sue, but gay.
