I get repulsed when I read about a woman’s obsession with a man and vice versa. J’adore Annie Ernaux but obsession is not charming at all.

However - what makes this a worthwhile read is her reflections on how an intense and prolonged feeling is able to make the time surrounding that feeling crystal clear even years after the feeling has passed. The same way writing captures a certain period of time, an all consuming feeling can do the same.

"A partir do mês de setembro do ano passado, não fiz mais nada a não ser esperar um homem: esperar que ele me telefonasse e que viesse a minha casa."

Annie Ernaux has this amazing gift to write about most profound, intrusive thoughts without feeling embarrassment. The most personal thinkings, those deep parts of your soul that never see light of day, yet here they are, written in the most simple language, sentence or two, that encompass the full complexity of human emotions. So here, she writes about passion, lust, and there is absolutely nothing simple about it, other than the way it is written. Real magic.

I thought this introduced some interesting depictions of self-aware obsession and yearning I hadn’t read much about before

I love Ernaux and her writing so I knew I’d enjoy this
