This novella is honestly pretty devastating. It's an exploration of obsession/infatuation, or what more contemporary armchair psychologists might call codependency. As the author points out in this autobiographical fiction, this is less about either one of the people involved in the affair and more about the effect he has on her psyche. There's a lot to be said here in terms of how passion relates to addiction amidst some beautiful writing.

I didn't love feeling called out.

It's giving main character energy.
