Might not be the best way to start a review comparing the book with another, but Simple Passion very much reminded me of Patel’s I’m a Fan that I read a few months ago. Ernaux’s character lives in a pink iridescent bubble, and sees through rose-tinted glasses, undoubtedly searching for that man of her desires. Oh, to want a man so badly.
But it was not just pure desperation for a man. The part at the end where the (perhaps even autobiographical) character looks back and appreciates the value of it especially spoke to me. They might not have known much about each other as so much was ignored, but this bliss, though simple, is not to be shrugged off.
And I, thanks to Ernaux, could now look back at a certain time and appreciate, in Ernaux’s words, the “passion” that I have long dismissed. There are books that are about life, and there are books that reminds us to live.
