This was a really compelling story. It was more character development than plot (although that’s not to say that it was lacking in plot), so I’m surprised that I enjoyed it so much because usually I like something fast paced. It was a heart-wrenching story of addiction, the impact on a family, a middle teen daughter’s struggle with identity, and much more. It ended slightly more positively than I expected, although knowing the ups and downs of addiction, I should not take that as an allusion to a utopia ahead. I enjoyed the way the dad cared for the local unhoused community as an outlet for his own grief and processing of complicated emotions.

i’ve questioned for the past year whether i’ve just grown out of YA books. kathleen glasgow has proven to me that i still love a good YA book. but it has to be GOOD! truthfully, that’s my standard for all books, so it’s not just a YA thing.
this novel is an emotional journey of a girl, who feels invisible, because of her brother’s drug addiction. it deals with sex, sexual harassment, drug addiction, relapse and recovery, and so much more in less than 400 pages. it’s intense but beautifully crafting. i couldn’t put this book down.
