I selected this book for my horror centric book club this month. The description pulled me in and had me super excited!

This book is full of classic tropes, but these tropes feel almost copied and pasted into the book without thought. Some threads of the plot are dropped and picked up later and the plot feels disjointed and choppy. I found a lot of the characters to be flat and unrealistic. I especially found the female characters to be poorly written.

The threat of sexual violence is used throughout and this book includes a gruesome non consensual sex scene. It would have been more interesting to find creative ways to terrorize our characters rather than rely on sexual violence as a plot device.

I enjoyed the dirt skelly monster and thought this was a creative monster with a terrifying image. The last section of this book was also quite terrifying and if the rest of this book had this aura I might have rated this book higher. Overall, I did not find this book to be that frightening throughout.

On a final note: we have to stan Krystal and the way she absolutely killed it as a zombie by wielding her own jaw as a weapon.

I bumped this book up to 2 stars because it genuinely made me laugh (at the audacity) and I had an enjoyable time reading this book and discussing it with my group.

I’m new-ish to the horror genre and was really looking forward to this book based on the description, but it missed the mark for me. The ending of the main storyline felt rushed, I never spent enough time in a single POV to feel true dread or horror, and I especially wasn’t a fan of the gratuitous sexual violence / threats of assault.

Two thumbs way up for Krystal, an absolute icon.
