Jaa was soll ich sagen. Weird

¿Ha sido lo mejor que he leído? Nop.

This is one of the few instances in my life, maybe ever, where I genuinely feel like the show was better than the book.

Things I liked:

4.5 stars ✨

I am a SUCKER for the rich, bad boy falls for the poor, studious girl trope–I’ve watched three different versions of the Boys Over Flowers series.

I’m surprised by how much the show kept from the book–I feel like that’s not very common–but I’m glad they’re so similar because the book is amazing!

While I prefer the show, the storytelling was just as captivating, with fleshed-out characters, a swoon-worthy romance, and lots of tension and angst. However, the writing itself felt kind of YA at times, and the dialogue wasn’t compelling or left a lasting impression.

I’m struggling to avoid comparing the book to the show, which I watched in 2023 before the English-translated version was available. Normally, when I read, I create a movie in my head–but with this text, I kept seeing the show replaying 😭, which felt unfair to the reading experience.

I’ll say this: I truly believe that if I had read this book before watching the show, I still would’ve really enjoyed it–maybe wouldn’t have giggled and kicked my feet as much, but it would’ve happened at least some of the time.

Overall, I might be biased because I’m obsessed with the show, but OMG this was incredible 😩😭🥰 I’m so grateful to have the ARC for book two because that ending was insane!!

Audiobook side note: Will Watt and Marisa Calin were pretty great narrators. It took a few chapters to get into Marisa’s parts because her voice is quite mature-sounding and didn’t feel like the best match for Ruby’s character.

I have had my eye on this series for a while and I held off watching the show until after I read this book and I have to say I have enjoyed it immensely. Ruby’s life isn’t terrible, she’s not floating in cash or does she have a trust fund, no, but she has a loving family and the value of hard work ethics. She tries to keep her head down at the school since she is a scholarship girl, but one incident brings her to the light or the attention of pretty boy, James. James is use to throwing money at things and people to get away with a lot and his life is lavish, but when Ruby isn’t falling at his feet, he knows there is something about her that makes him intrigued. These two are complete opposites and yet their struggles, not identical, are similar in the way they want to do the things they love and accomplish so much. With vibes of Cruel Intentions and Gossip Girl this story takes similarities and its own twists to create a fun twisted world for James and Ruby that I can’t wait to see where they go from here.
