This is the English translation of a YA novel (first in a trilogy) that is apparently now a streaming TV series (where have I been?). So, I went into this with no prior connection at all.

This is a basic rich, spoiled boy - less rich, hard-working girl premise, but done better than others. The characters are well written, and there's a lot of slow burn. My only caveat is the sheer number of back-and-forth movements in the mains' relationship. While I expect some ups and downs in a new relationship, Ruby and James are not learning from their trials, thus not moving forward at anything but a snail's pace. It got a bit frustrating at times as I felt some of the same issues were being rehashed over and over. I felt that Ruby as a character was much more mature than James in her handling of her life and their budding romance. And while I could see James' family difficulties and his yearning for freedom, I didn't feel as if he was trying (at all) to break free and move forward.

I do plan to read the second in series and hope to find the growth arc speeded up a bit.

My thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group / Berkley for providing the free early arc of Save Me for review. The opinions are strictly my own.

DID NOT FINISH

ok lets be honest chosing to read a german book physically was the worst idea possible

💖 Huge shoutout to Berkley for sending me a free early copy of Save Me by Mona Kasten.

🎓💫 Welcome to Maxton Hall!

Ruby is a scholarship student with one goal: Oxford or bust. She’s driven, focused, and not interested in distractions—until she crosses paths with James Beaufort, the rich, cocky lacrosse captain who has trouble written all over him 😏🎯

When Ruby stumbles upon a secret involving James’s sister, he’ll do anything to keep her quiet. But enemies quickly become something much more... and ohhh the tension 🔥

💖 I devoured this book!! I only meant to read a few chapters and ended up glued to the pages. The pacing is perfect, the writing flows so easily, and I loved the dual POV—especially the few peeks we get into James’s head.

👑 Ruby is a total girls' girl (my fave!), and her friendship with Lydia was one of the sweetest parts of the book. I can’t wait to see how Lydia’s story unfolds too!

✨ If you loved Cruel Intentions vibes with a boarding school twist—this one's for you.
Also... THAT CLIFFHANGER?! I’m already reaching for book 2 😭📚

I read this because I enjoyed the TVshow and wanted to know more about the story after the show.

Truth be told, this book had already been a hit in my country when it came out years ago, but I didn't approach it because I believed it would be too YA to me. Well, the characters are indeed 18 year olds who think like teens, but despite the clichés and some predictable outcomes, it was enjoyable even for me (who is older than the target audience). It was a light read and it managed me to keep me entertained, which is what I wanted :)

The book shed some insight on some holes that the TVshow had left the audience to guess (or that they mean to explore in the second season). It also made some slight changes to the storyline, but I found them okay. Reading the book really helped give more context to the show (I think the casting choices were amazing btw).

I'm really curious to know what happens in the second book! I will surely read it.
