Just like [b:Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel|153542|Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel|Virginia Lee Burton|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1386924293s/153542.jpg|1069773], we're fond of this one. It's a little dated, but it can still be a conversation starter. My son couldn't quite wrap his head around the theme of the book. Maybe it just didn't make sense to him: Here we are, living in a big city and yet it's so very pleasant, much unlike the city in the book -- trees, parks, beach, the bay ... In fact he kept asking me "Why doesn't the little house like the city??" So, the message may have gone amiss. My favorite in the book were the pictures of the little house through the seasons. But all the pictures and the typesetting is delightful. With more understanding, I know my kid will like this book even more.

What would it be like if inanimate objects had thoughts and feelings? Would we treat things better?

A charming, sad and ultimately uplifting little book about the encroachment of urban life on one little house's patch of countryside. The ending is an obvious if fantastical one.

I love this little gem of a book about finding your own space.

When I finished Gabriel said, “That was a good story!” And he usually only likes nonfiction about trucks and legos so you know it’s true.

A cute, peaceful book.

I loved these detailed illustrations! I also enjoyed seeing the passage of time in the illustrations and endpapers. I didn’t love the near vilification of the city, though I understand the message of progress not really being better.

Quiet story about the joys of living in the country. I liked the message, but the text was too wordy and meandering for my taste.

It has been so long since I read this one and it still made me misty-eyed.
