A classic Indeed and for all the right reasons. Emily Bronte depicts the relationships over years of two neighbors with fueds of love and hate that started in their childhood. Class commentary of the time, and a relentless reminder of the stark differences in upbringing especially during the time period. You hear the business of the "masters of the houses" from the perspective of their loyal servant as she informs a new tenant of the former inhabitants histories amongst one another. Ellen Dean makes for a reliable and enthusiastic narrarator not without bias that have you on edge at every twist of the plot (which is not without twists!)

This book is full of hatred. Therefore, it was a really tense read and not really that enjoyable.

Being set in the moors, the entire novel has this bleak atmosphere and feeling of isolation. It was nothing like I expected, however I feel like I might have to read it again to full understand the plot.

like 3.75 - wowsers!! i think its both cool and a shame how literature has evolved to be a craft of language itself as well as just plot/storytelling, bc i wouldve LOVED this if it was written a century later (but thats not fair on emily) . anywho all of this to say that most of these characters are fantastic and complex and i really loved the books arc as sort of this tragic completion of a bittersweet life. the section with linton and young cathering drove me almost crazy..why did that go on for SO long and i wished we had gotten that same detail of interactions and show-not-tell relationships for the first half of the book, but alas. and sauuur atmospheric so moody so gothic

I just don't think it's my cup of tea. I like Jane Austen. I liked Jane Eyre. But listening to this was going in one ear and out the other. Maybe I need to read with my eyes?
