This one is a bit different, written from the pov of our slasher rather than from one of the victims or the classic final girl. Jone’s writing is off the charts, mainly because he was also 17 in the year of 1989, and grew up in rural Texas. The story has such a heavy impact, I can tell Jones put his entire soul into this work and it is beautiful. It felt almost intimate while reading. This is written like a love letter to the horror genre and all of its intricacies and tropes. Jones examines and shows us what the genre truly represents at its core.

This is a book I would very much rather people experience for themselves rather than me going on my winded explanations. Pick this up for a classic slasher with a bit of twist

I ended up DNFing this one. The concept was intriguing, but I struggled with the narrative style and the unreliable narrator. The intense, chaotic POV made it hard for me to connect with the story or characters. I wasn’t sure what was real, and instead of feeling drawn in, I felt more confused and disconnected. I think this just wasn’t the right fit for me personally.

Great alternative to the typical “slasher/final girl” trope. SGJ is a master storyteller

It’s a cute premise: “superhero teen discovers his powers” except it’s a slasher movie villain

The scenarios are interesting but the writing is a bit messy at times; it’s hard to tell where or when the character is

I went into this book completely blind. Stephen Garham Jones is a great writer and has interesting stories and characters. I really liked this one. It wasnt exactly what I was expecting (if I was even expecting anything) but it was really good. The writing style, being told the story by the main character, was disjointed but in a good way with clever plotting. Really good vibes with a hint of 80s nostalgia.
