This started off good, and I thought the idea for the story was interesting. Then it turned into some boring romance between an old man and a teenager. And nothing happened for about 300 pages. The ending picked up a bit, but by that time I just didn't care anymore. I also didn't like the main character, who had way too many TSTL moments.

I really, really had high hopes for this book. They weren't met. At all. The description sounded amazing but it didn't live up to the description.

Also, how many is "an alarming number of ferrets" As seen in the About the Author? I'm just really curious.

Actual rating is 3.5! I'm a fan of Jodi Meadows and love her work, and this concept is so unique, but I don't know think this story was for me. I would have liked to see the idea explored more, but this was mainly a romance from the perspective of a complex heroine who has so much room to grow.

There wasn't quite as much world building as I expected, though what I did see interested me. I loved the concept of everyone reincarnating and knowing who is who despite the changes in their features. Of course, the heart of this story is Ana's journey into accepting a new lifestyle away from her harsh reality.

I do find Ana to be a very unique character, as she has severe anxiety and paranoia from living an extremely isolated, abusive, and neglectful life. My heart went out to her, but if I am being totally honest, I found her personality to be a little grating and over the top at times. I was never unsympathetic and I understood how she saw the world, but it was a lot to constantly take in when so many people were trying to be kind to her.

One of those kind people would be the love interest, Sam, who is genuinely a sweet, wonderful person and a perfect foil for Ana's personality. He never stopped trying for her, which made their relationship all the more endearing and her poor personality easier to manage. He had some truly great moments and I would love to see more of him.

The story moved slowly, with most of the action focused on the romance and growth between Ana and Sam, though there were some thrilling moments near the end.

While this wasn't for me unfortunately, I do recommend it to anyone looking to read a complex, sweet, yet challenging romance.

So when I read the jacket of this book I thought it was going to be awesome. Then I actually started reading it and quite frankly I was bored through most of it. I didn't get into it until page 300. The last 100 pages were interesting. The rest was boring, slow, and just plain confusing.

The plot was very interesting and original if she had done it right it would have been an incredible book. So the plot is that soul are reincarnated over and over again with all their memories intact. One day Ciana dies and instead of being reincarnated a new soul comes which they call Ana. Now everyone is afraid it's going to happen again. Sounds interesting right..?

The characters were good though a couple were shallow. Sam was deep and mysterious. I thought he was too secretive though. Ana was a new soul and so she was learning, changing and growing through the whole thing. I like that she can take care of herself and isn't a push over.

For the past five thousand years, the same one million souls have continuously been reborn. The night Ciana died, the temple flashed dark for the only time. Five years later, Li and her lover Menehem welcomed a daughter into the world. She was expected to be Ciana’s reincarnation but when the Soul Tellers pressed the newborn’s hand into the soul-scanner, no match was found. The soul had never been born before. Everyone wondered where did it come from and what had happened to Ciana’s soul?

On Ana’s eighteenth birthday, she left the only home she had ever known for a journey of self-discovery to find out who and what she was. Having been what was called the nosoul, Ana had a very unhappy upbringing. Her mother Li was cruel to her and blamed Ana for Menehem leaving them behind. She decides to go to the city of Heart to beg the Counsil for research time in the great library to see if she could uncover her existence. On the first night of her journey, she runs into trouble with a sylph and ends up in an icy lake. Just when she realizes she will drown, a mysterious stranger rescues her.

Freezing cold, Ana wakes up in a tent in the arms of the stranger. After a bit of a struggle, Ana realizes her rescuer is her age. Sam willingly accepts Ana even after she tells him she is the nosoul. Having never known acceptance, Ana is leery at first, but slowly opens up to Sam. He tells her that she is a newsoul and takes care of her when she is injured saving his life during a sylph attack. Several days are spent at his cabin caring for her burns. Then they leave together to go to Heart.

But not everything is smooth sailing in Heart. In order to gain admittance into the city, Sam agrees to be Ana’s guardian/teacher and many citizens stare and whisper about her. Soon Ana discovers who Sam truly is and her world is turned on its side. Who is Sam and why is it important to Ana? Can she find acceptance when everyone but her has known each other for thousands of years? What happened to Ciana’s soul when she died and why was Ana born with a new soul? Will Ana find acceptance in herself? Can she and Sam fight their mutual attraction? And what happens when Li comes to Heart?

Incarnate is the first book in a trilogy with book two to be published in winter 2013 and concluding ion the winter of 2014 with book three.

Intriguing concept. Writing style wasn't my favorite. I found myself skimming a lot of it. Will read the next one.

Ana is young, a mere 18 years old, when she decides it is time to leave her mother and travel to Heart in search of why she was born. A nosoul, that's what her mother called her. A mistake. Ana took the place of some else. Some one who will never come back again. In Range everyone is reincarnated; everyone except for Ana and the soul she replaced. How could anyone ever care for a nosoul? They aren't even human. They can't feel, can't love. They are as insignificant as a butterfly. And Ana is the only one. But she hopes to find answers in Heart, the center of Ranger. On the way she meets Sam, who rescues her from drowning, and together they search for Ana's answers.

That's a really short run down of the book, I know, but anymore would be giving too much away. I would hate to ruin it for you. It is such a good book. It honestly reminded me of a dream I had once and that made me feel like I was really there. Like I was Ana. It was pretty incredible. The only issue I had was with the ending. Very anticlimactic. But that was before I knew that Incarnate is the first in a trilogy. Thank goodness for that. Because, seriously, I need more.

Pros:
- New and original plot line and world
- interesting and convincing plot line
- engaging prose (it captures your attention)
- Active female lead (she takes some initiative with her life, she makes choices and works with the consequences.)

Cons:
- She paints her characters with a wide brush. They could use more work.
- Unnecessary and obligatory YA romance (really? Can't we have a heroine without a boy?)
- Meadows could have pressed at the existential questions that her book brings up more deeply. As it is, she barely addresses them. (What does it mean to be alive if you can't truly die? Is there a God? What does it mean to act with omnipotent powers? Why have rules or morals if no one dies?)
