You wouldn't guess by the synopsis, but this novel is Insanely Good. First danmei novel/series I've ever read, and one of my all-time favorites! Very funny, very charming, but also surprisingly sad at times. Luo Binghe is The Character of All Time and he lives rent-free in my brain.

Review is for volumes 1-3, the main body of this work, because I’m writing this after finishing and I don’t feel like going back to section out what did and didn’t happen in each book.

This is very clearly a freshman work — the difference between the flow and character development of Scum Villain vs Heaven Official is noticeable. I enjoyed the meta aspect of it and the System was an interesting plot device. I haven’t read or watched a lot of transmigration/isekai novels/manga/anime, so I’m inexperienced with the genre, but this was a relatively unobtrusive foray into it. I liked the characters, although even after 3 volumes I don’t know that I know Luo Binghe that well. The boy - certainly, the spoiled maiden - somewhat, but how we got from a to b is rather muddled. I liked Shen’s investigation into character backstories, and how the female characters actually got to be something other than thirsty and jealous as they were in the “stallion novel”. But some parts of it were unfulfilling, and I’m not sure that I find this to be all that romantic even, it’s more just two idiots with one brain cell to share, so they’re meant to be.
