Some books give you an amazing story and some feel like a full, immersive experience. This was the latter, just brilliant, with a definite lingering sadness and attachment to the characters.

”I would never know what it felt like to fly, but I knew all about what it was like to come crashing back to earth.”

There’s not much I can say about this book without giving the plot twists away. What I can say is that I’m glad I finished listening to this tonight in my bed rather than sometime tomorrow while driving. It would have been very had to see the pavement through the tears. I know I’m a bit of a soft touch in general, but this one really got to me and I’ll be thinking of these characters, this story, and what it all means in this real world for a long time.

I know when I pick up a Jodi Picoult book that it will be two things: a tough topic that is relevant to our world that will make me think and I am going to learn something about that topic. Mad Honey did not disappoint, of course. I always know when reading her books that they are going to be emotional and phenomenal. Mad Honey was both of those things and more. I haven’t read many books with
a transgender character and any that I have read haven’t necessarily educated the audience on anything related to the topic. When the bomb was dropped halfway through the book that Lily was transgender, I was caught completely unaware. But not only did that factor heavily into the purported topic of the murder trial, it also weighed heavily into the character development of all of the mains- Lily, Asher, Olivia, and Ava.

Every time I finish a Picoult book, I’m left wanting to read another. Her books are thought-provoking but also palate cleansing in that there is no question about what she wants her readers to learn.

I am not a fan of Jodi Picoult’s writing, but this story stayed with me.

Jennifer Finney Boylan did an amazing job talking about what it is to be a trans woman through Lily and Elizabeth, and helped convey universal humanness to cisgender folks.

Picoult’s writing, however, seems to throw in everything but the kitchen sink of tragic situations for sensational effect (i.e. battered wife, and abortion, and Selena eluding to the disproportionate rate of Black murders at the hands of police). Her writing feels like she’s sloppily trying to cover too much ground in order to make the reader feel something.

And yet, the overall story was good food for thought and gave voice to an underrepresented population. I was glad to have read Lily’s story.
