It all began with someone opening a car door and driving off. Reacher witnesses this innocuous event, paying it little attention while spending time in New York City. When called upon to answer questions about the man he saw, Reacher soon realises that he may have witnessed part of an elaborate ransom payment. A woman and her daughter have been kidnapped and Reacher is hired by the distraught husband to help bring them home at any cost. While working with his temporary employer, he soon learns of the man's sordid and criminal past, which may play a role in the larger kidnapping rationale. The further he digs, the less Reacher thinks this is a simple swap of money for live bodies, but perhaps a payback for horrible decisions made overseas. Working with an ex-FBI agent, Reacher discovers that nothing is as it seems and sometime love has caveats and limits. Child brings some of his personal knowledge to the pages of this novel, adding a new layer of excitement and intrigue.
As interesting as Child can make these Reacher novels, I am always surprised to see what can be done to one up the series to that point. Child keeps Reacher as a 'nothing holds me down' type character, returning to cities he has already visited (perhaps one downside to the series), with adventures wherever he goes. However, each book is fresh and highly gripping with nuances yet to be revealed and new angles about Reacher's life yet to be highlighted. I have made sure many people know about this wonderful series and its central character, in hopes that it can be a wonderful addition to the beach reading list or travel pile.
Kudos, Mr. Child for making me more and more curious with each new novel.

Five stars is probably one too many - I'm not sure any Jack Reacher book *really* deserves "It's amazing!" But this was definitely one of my favorite Reacher books. I like that there was more investigating and thinking and a little less kicking people's knees in. Some interesting characters and some really nice plot twists. Can't ask for much more out of this kind of book.
Listened to the audiobook version of this one again (can you tell I've just discovered Overdrive and its connection to our local library?). Same narrator as Personal, he does an excellent job with Reacher's calm, bad ass observations. This one started out a little *too* observation-y and spent a lot of time and adjectives on the set dressing.
The plot is a little thinner than Personal, maybe, but it's still a good read if you can overlook the shaky premise on which Reacher's involvement is predicated.

This was the first Jack Reacher novel I read.
Got me hooked.
A man's man who treats women as equals.

This time, the plot in itself might have been simpler and more erratic but nonetheless it was a pleasure to accompany Reacher once more!!
Everything started so suddenly and quickly that it was confusing, and every opinion that was brought up was so believable... but in this case it wasn't difficult to see where things would end upon Yes there were some twists but it was quite predictable!!
And just like always: not everything and everyone is as it seems...

Decent travel reading - not too taxing on the mind, and plenty entertaining.... But, alas, not one of the best Reacher books (in my opinion).... I liked the set-up, the plot twist was sufficiently gratifying, but the chase-and-mayhem section seemed almost formulaic, almost as if Child was working against a deadline.
I think part of my frustration here was that - unlike many of the prior installments - Reacher knew too much about things that there was not necessarily any reason he'd know all about. (Why, for example, would Reacher be an expert on Manhattan geography and traffic patterns?) I've typically been pleased with Child for portraying Reacher's strengths as strengths but not over-reaching into the realm of the absurd - this time around, I found myself too often shaking my head and thinking, nah, that didn't make much sense. Then again, just because it wasn't one of my favorites, that didn't make it any less effective at passing the travel time....

This was the best Reacher novel I've read. Couldn't put it down.
I love the Reacher books but this one fell a little short of the more recent titles.
