Sure, Johann may not be a scientist or doctor, but there was immense research behind the writing of this book, including countless conversations with said professions.

If anyone wants an informative and educational read on a topic that is hard enough to explain or discuss, I’d absolutely recommend this.

I would love everyone with depression and anxiety to read this book. And it's not an easy read as it goes against what we have been spoon-fed for decades. I have read so. many. books about depression and anxiety in the hopes of unlocking a door to my own mind to no avail. I have tried so many meds to no relief. Why? It's maddening. This book looks beyond the pervasive chemical imbalance $bias$ and deals with the social, cultural, and even anthropological roots of depression. He researches 9 causes of depression. It all made perfect sense to me, so much so that I cried quite a few times. Whispering "that's so true" through my tears.

You will probably be angry and even push back, as the author did himself when researching this book, as it forces you to look at some truths head on. Truths that are so common sense we look right over them, and some that are deeper. It takes some time to process the research he uncovers from a sociological standpoint that up-ends what the pharmaceutical research has been yelling over other studies for years. Truly fascinating and thought provoking. All in all, it's a pretty inspiring and uplifting book once you get past your own viewpoints and look at depression from a different vantage point.

A journalist writing a self help book about depression relaying his personal experiences along the way. It reads well, the man can write. But it is hard to go from 40+ years of culture telling me depression is one thing and then this guy comes along and says: the pills don't really work that well.

Can still recommend it to people who want to hear a different view, a different take.

Discusses the many factors that can lead to depression, and suggests ways of addressing the causes instead of trying to address the biochemical factors in isolation. Highly recommended.
