If you love theatre, this is a must read.

The narration is a MUST LISTEN.

I learned so many theatre tidbits listening to this. It’s like page six for golden age musical theatre girlies.

I read this book slowly in order to savor it, it's just a joy all the way through. I am, no doubt, the perfect audience for this book. I love a book with footnotes and am peculiarly positioned to get all of the references (Camp Tamiment! The Mad Magazine Rewue! A Billion for Boris! Williams Doll! The Last of Sheila!) But also such an unusual and well told memoir (a credit to Rodgers candor and Jesse Green's skills). There's so little vanity and so much telling detail.

LOVED this book. It is like having a friend who knew everyone on Broadway and dished all the dirt and didn't try to make herself look like a heroine. SO honest. Highly recommend. It was just fun!

I just so thoroughly enjoyed this memoir of a bright, talented, smart, determined, opinionated and funny woman.

This was a fantastic memoir, written by Jesse Green who spent years listening to Mary tell her life stories. It's written either in her words exactly, or in her voice, with footnotes to explain who all of the legendary theater and music people are that she had in her circle. It is immediately fun and dishy, and she doesn't hold back about her own faults and failings, or what she thinks about other people. Her relationship with Stephen Sondheim was fascinating, as well as her relationships with her parents. I really enjoyed this one.

A million stars for the peerless writing and humor. A million minus four stars docked for the catty, just plain mean digs that litter the book.

I can’t remember why I decided to read this. Clearly not my thing, and much too long. If you love historical celebrity gossip and don’t mind any illusions of goodness about the legends of musical theater being squashed, it might be for you. Baranski does a great job. I want about 12 of my 15 hours back.
