The story was interesting and had a fairytale-like lesson and moral to the story.
I did not appreciate the way women were characterized through their speech and actions. There was a large portion of one chapter, in which the women discuss the most preferable "shape of their breasts." Shinji is often written to be staring directly at Hatsue's chest and complexion. However, I do understand the context of the time this book was written, 1956.
Not a bad story, but it is definitely out of date!

It's Mishima; so basically even a lesser book by him is still a great book. Incredible prose, character analysis, yup, that's all here. But I think this novel suffers some from the author's own blindsides--he can't get out of his own way to see the truly interesting details of this world he created. The women divers, Hatsue, Shinji's mom, and even Shinji himself: they're all wonderful characters. But when Mishima forces Shinji to save the day with his "manly" ways, he nearly creates a comical ending. Still, like this book, I'd bet just about anything by Mishima is a worthwhile read.

An awkward teenage romance with a neat setting that’s used in a great way in the story, especially with Chiyoko and her lighthouse family. The characters are terrible and emotionless, the plot basic, but it’s Mishima so it’s at least sometimes respectful when we get a glimpse of Shinji’s inner thoughts.
Not as good as I remember, and difficult to disassociate the story from Mishima's ethnonationalism bordering on fascism.
Regardless, The Sound of Waves evokes some deeply nostalgic feelings. Unten port in Nakijin on Okinawa is the point of departure for Izena Jima where I spent many weekends carousing during my time on the JET Programme. Island life in Japan has a kind of purity where social connections persist over generations. Mishima captures both the close relationship with nature / the sea and the tight bonds of the community.
Mishima has always seemed to me kind of a Japanese Hemingway, writing with an austerity and simplicity and a concern for how traditional masculinity fits into the modern world. However, there is a sweetness and longing in The Sound of Waves - I was expecting a Hemingwayesque tragic ending. Instead, the community on Uta-Jima rises to the occasion to ensure the happiness of the two main characters.
