A sweet, classic love story, told by a master.

This book's description of the female body is... weird, to say the least. It gave me the ick every time the author tried to remind us how male and virile Shinji is. Like, wtf is a "male silence"

Loved the prose in this. The translation was beautiful! The setting is almost its own character, both in terms of how richly it’s described and how it influences and shapes the characters. I think that’s what I liked most about it! It was also set at such a specific interesting moment - in a small island village in postwar Japan. The isolation is important to this story and the characters’ actions and choices, but as a modern reader it feels like the modern world will begin to loom over this island and limit how long this low tech, sleepy community will go on as it is!

Plot wise, it was meh. Intense fixation on breasts. I’d be interested to read more of this author though because it does feel like he’s depicting a society I don’t often come across in my other reading in a very rich, evocative way, and in rather short, digestible stories.
