I found this book so easy to read. It was beautifully written and although the story is fictional, it delves deep into the reality of being an outcast.

I've wanted to read this one for a while but it was never the right time nor was I in the right headspace for it. Although I'm not sure I would say I'm in the right headspace (hello slump my old friend), I finally got around to it. Elif Shafak has been an author that I knew I would love and this was a great introduction for me to her books.

10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World starts off in a dumpster in Istanbul. In that dumpster lies Lelia who has just been brutality murdered. In the following 10 Minutes 38 Seconds we follow Lelia recalling her life. From her early childhood to her adulthood. We witness the trials Lelia has faced, being introduced to those who have harmed her and those who loved her.

There are many things I loved about this book but my favorite part was the found family element of it. I loved Lelia's friends. They were all so different yet were the best friends you could ever ask for.

Some of the book topics/commentary include the violence/prejudice against sex workers, SA victims, discrimination against trans women/lgbtq+ community and much more.

I think these topics were well done. However, please check the trigger warnings. There was a SA scene involving someone underage early on in the book that  I really struggled through. I wasn't sure I could continue the book but glad I ended up doing so.

I feel like I should have liked this more. Very compelling characters, but I'm sad that it revolves around the death of a sex workers. Hit me incorrectly but that could be down to my mood atm

Edit: on reflection I was too hard. This book has stuck with me. Changing my rating from 3.25 to 3.75

i don't write reviews on here so consider this a big deal. this book is staggeringly good
