I don't usually like books about the Muslim women in the Middle East because their oppression is just disturbing, but what is different about this book is the clarity of the emotional tale. Even though Leila is young she knows she cannot live with hypocrisy, but those strong feelings is also why suffers a life as a whore and dies young. The book is about all the people that touch her life - her young traumatized mother and the other women she meets who are trying to escape the restrictions put on them. It is touching, memorable, and ageless story.

oh man. this is in my top 5 favorite books ever. some really wonderful lines in here, some extreme heartbreaks and soaring bouts of love. made me sob on a plane to nyc to see some of my best friends. the bit from Mr Chaplin’s perspective also got me (shocker).

“The world is no longer the same for the one who has fallen in love, the one who is at its very centre; it can only spin faster from now on.”
