As usual I didn't understand the first part to enjoy the last twos. Difficult book to say the least...

Libro difficile a dir poco.

Beautiful. Amazing. Painful to read. I am not a fan of stream of consciousness. Still, I do love Virginia Woolf. I am going to read it again - maybe when I have a whole weekend to do nothing but read it. I think it's that kind of book. Sigh. I feel incredibly stupid now, because I know I should love and understand this book. I was an English major, after all!

Read only because I had to for a book club and ended up loving! The writing is so accurate to how we think as we go about everyday life. Lovely!

There are passages here that speak directly to me, through me, as though the characters (or Virginia Woolf herself) were possessing me. I believe many people will find the same. It’s an unsettling but ultimately mystical, rewarding feeling. Truly a book for the ages, a book that captures the richness of human experience in its most quotidien and most tragic musters. For me, this is one to reread again and again, because it also addresses the artistic process (when asking after the meaning of life, we can find religion or we can find solace in beauty, which is to say artistic creation). Brilliant, difficult, everlasting!

If you've ever wished for time to stop, I suggest you read To The Lighthouse. Mrs. Dalloway was lost on me but I realise that Woolf requires patience and complete concentration and if you allow mind and body to stay still for long enough, the beauty of her prose will reveal itself. Her characters are like portraits that need to be contemplated. Actually, her books are analogous to paintings - every word a brushstroke; and trying to determine what an artist might be thinking when she lets the light fall here and not there, is what Woolf seeks to understand: the process and structure of thought. Woolf deals with the passage of time, loss, the distance between the closest of people and how those divides can be bridged. Her language is lyrical, poetic and profound. She's a genius, I get that now.

Genuinamente extraordinaria.
